FLAMING CONFIDENZA && MAVERICK HARRIS
EVERYDAY SMILE && KALLY SULLIVAN
BEYOND PERFECTION && CLINTON WARD
APOLLO BEAR && ISABELLE NOTTINGHAM
DISTANCE: 9 Furlongs
PLAN: Run the first 7 furlongs at a quick pace then push the last 2 furlongs
ESTIMATED POSITIONS: Olio (Front) - Smiles (Preceder) - Denza (Mid) - Bear (Preceder)
The day had finally cooled down enough for the last group of horses to run their workout on the dirt track. Despite the heat, the dirt still held moisture from the last rain and made the footing ideal for the runners. Felicity left the confines of her office to join the four horses at the track to observe their proceedings. They had already warmed up by the time she reached the dirt track across the property and were loading into the gate as she leaned against the rail on the homestretch. All four had responded well with the warm up and besides a playful buck here and there, had behaved rather well.
The gates clanged open and they launched from within, emerging with breathtaking speed and precision. Apollo Bear was the first to the front and quickly assumed his running position while the others settled behind. Smiles, the chestnut mare, was quick on his heals while the golden Triple Tiara runner took mid and Bear followed in the rear. They were to run the same setup as the turf distance runners, a fast paced seven furlongs and then run the horses all out the last two. It was as close to a regular race they were going to get and Fell wanted them to be prepared after having a month off.
They were rounding the second turn before anything had begun to change. Clinton seemed to be having an issue holding Beyond Perfection together enough to pass Flaming Confidenza. He drifted to the outside of the palomino, almost three wide, before being coaxed back by Denza's side. In front, Apollo Bear was fighting off a determined Everyday Smile. The mare was ready to take the lead but to her frustration Kallie held her back. The jockey knew the battle was coming but now was not the right time to move. Denza, patient as ever, floated in the middle of the group. She eyed the eager stallion off to her right and adjusted her speed slightly to stay one step in front. This had a maddening effect on Bear as he pinned his ears and abruptly yanked on the reins. Clinton managed to keep him steady, watching as the seven furlong mark quickly approached, counting the seconds.
As the marker flashed by, Clinton opened up his mount and they gained speed on the younger horses. The golden mare was expecting his move and by the time he had quicken his pace, she was already gaining on the leaders. Up ahead, Smiles drew even with Olio and moved to pass him on the outside. The nine furlongs were being eaten up as the horses roared down the track, giving it their all. The chestnut mare had finally managed to pass Apollo Bear. Distance was opening up agonizingly slowly, too slow for Kallie's liking. She knew the closers were breathing down their neck and she showed Smiles the crop to gain some more speed.
In the middle of the pack Denza sat, waiting as the others fought for the lead. Beyond Perfection had passed her, but did not have much of a lead. The Triple Tiara runner was waiting for a hole to open up so she could slip through. A furlong out, Maverick spotted an opening on the inside, just big enough to slip the lythe mare through. Denza kicked into a new gear and dove for the opening, surprising both Apollo Bear and Bella at their boldness. This is what they were known to do. This is why they had gotten as far as they did.
In a heartbeat, the race was over. The horses were all really close as they passed the wire. Denza managed to squeak by, a nose in front of Smiles. The two mares had eyed each other as they powered down the dirt. But in the end, the golden mare won out. In the rear, Beyond Perfection slipped up as he dove out to the outside on the last turn, causing Clinton to curse. The stallion was known for those mistakes and did not seem to be growing out of it. He had, however, shown tons of potential with his strong closing capabilities. Just a step behind the stallion was Apollo Bear, slightly worn out from his escapade with Smiles, but still fighting until the end.
